A Guide To The Driving Test

The idea of going for your practical driving test can be daunting and extremely stressful for young drivers with so many things to know and so many mistakes to be made. The RTA may have made things difficult by increasing logbook hours to 120, however they did everyone a favour when they constructed the Driving Test Book That Is Easy & Makes Sense (although they prefer to call it ‘A

Guide to the Driving Test’.

A Guide to the Driving Test provides all the right information, is clear, and all the pretty pictures bring visual learning to a whole new level. The guide goes into detail about the 5 main aspects of low risk driving – your driving test will essentially be marked based on how you show an understanding of these points so it’s sort of a big deal.

1. Observation

  • Scanning
  • Checking blind spots

2. Speed Management

  • Maintaining space to the front
  • Maintaining space when stopped
  • Reducing speed

3. Road Positioning

  • Buffering
  • Turns at intersections
  • Manoeuvres

4. Decision Making

  • Affecting the crash avoidance space of others
  • Situations with limited vision

5. Responding to Hazards

  • Hazard and response

The guide elaborates on all these points and more and has fun FYI one-liners along the way. It is absolutely recommended that each young driver reads the guide prior to taking the test to assist them. The book is available online (just Google the name and it will most probably be there) or head down to any RTA registry and pick one up for free.
